If you have come online looking to compare tandem strollers, you’re definitely in the right place. Basically what I will do here, before you go to the online stores and look at their comparison charts and video comparisons of tandem jogging stroller models, is take you through a few features that you definitely will want to keep an eye out for. Now, tandem double strollers for jogging exist in huge quantities. For a double jogging stroller, the tandem variety is probably the best way to go about it, with one baby in the front and one in the back.
However, in very windy areas, the control you will have over the tandem jogging stroller will be dangerously low, but this is only in extreme cases. Look for a tandem jogging stroller with an aluminum (or ‘aluminium’) frame. These frames are very lightweight and definitely take pounds off the actual double stroller, while still providing the same stability (or just about…) as steel frames which are much heavier. Make sure that the front wheel of the tandem stroller is quite large and is air-filled — this is pretty much standard, but look for a 16-inch wheel and not a 12-inch wheel that may come with some Bob and Graco models. The Maclaren tandem jogging strollers are pretty good in this regard. The bigger the front wheel, the more comfortably you will be able to push the stroller while jogging. So, as a jogger tandem stroller, it will also need a padded handlebar so you can jog for an hour or more without any discomfort or (gasp!) blisters that may appear after a hard session out and about with your kids.
Furthermore, parent cup holders made of fabric are never under-appreciated; you will want a bottle of water to take with you. Even if you do not want to take a hand off the handle bar as you’re going, it’s ok to stop every few minutes and take a gulp of water. The frame should also be able to fold easily, and the fabric must be easily washable.
One of the most important things is probably the suspension system. Whether the wheels in the rear are rather large or small, you will want rear suspension springs on your tandem jogging stroller. This is just common sense; you will be running fast or medium-paced and there needs to be some suspension there to shield your children from the obvious large bumps that will definitely come up every now and then. For the children, you will also want a napper (otherwise called a grab bar) so they have something hold onto during the ’scary’ moments (from their point of view, there will definitely be some scary moments during turns and so on!).
Also, look for carrying strap in case you’re doing a half-half jogger trip where you jog with your babies in the seats and take the stroller on the way there, and walk on the way back if your babies / toddlers are able to come along by themselves as well.
A carrying strap comes in handy anyway, especially when taking a stroller through an airport if you’re going lightweight without much baggage.
